Seasonal/Part-time Employment

The City anticipates that the following temporary employment opportunities may exist throughout the year.  Applications are taken and maintained for a period of six months from the date of application, establishing a pool of applicants for possible job openings.  Dates of employment are not known as of the date of this announcement.  A temporary employee is a non-benefited employee who is hired for specific jobs or projects, typically of short duration.  These jobs may be a few hours per week or up to several months in a calendar year. CUSTODIAL MAINTENANCE WORKERS: Depending on work areas assigned, may remove snow from walkways; operate power equipment to trim grass, shrubbery, and trees; edge sidewalks and flower beds; clean pools and fountains; move materials, equipment and supplies; setup and tear-down of flooring stages, bleachers, portable walls, tables, chairs, etc.; transplant trees, shrubs and flowers; and perform irrigation repairs and minor maintenance to mowing equipment, buildings, and structures.  May require valid driver's license, ability to work in varied weather conditions, and ability to climb ladders and frequently walk, lift and stand for extended periods of time. $7.00 to $9.85/hr., depending on qualifications.

CONCESSIONS WORKERS: Take orders, serve food, use commercial dishwasher, clean, launder, stock shelves, make change.  May be required to work in adverse weather, stand and walk for long periods, and frequently perform heavy lifting.  These positions are located at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center and in the Recreation Division.  Some positions require applicant to be 21 years of age (BFOQ) $7.00 to $9.85/ hr., depending on qualifications.

CIVIC CENTER TICKET SELLER/CASHIER: Operate cash register, computer, and adding machine.  Take orders in person and by phone.  Make change.  May be required to stand for long periods.  $7.00 to $9.85/hr., depending on qualifications.

CIVIC CENTER EVENT STAFF: Miscellaneous positions including ticket takers, parking lot personnel, ushers and event staff.  May require valid drivers license, ability to work in adverse weather, and stand and walk for prolonged periods, perform other duties as assigned.  Days and hours may vary.  $7.00 to $9.85 /hr., depending on qualifications.

CIVIC CENTER STAGEHAND: Unload and load trucks and help set up sound, light and stage equipment for touring shows .  Must be 18 years of age (BFOQ) and wear safety clothing and equipment.  $10.78 to $11.66/hr.

BUS DRIVER: Drive buses along established routes (Rapid Transit System or Retired Senior Volunteer Program), operate wheelchair lift, record passenger counts & written reports, visually check for proper equipment operation.  Required Commercial Driver's License (RTS) and experience in operation of bus or similar public conveyance.  $9.31 to $13.10/hr.

PROFESSIONAL: May perform professional and/or administrative duties related to specialized areas of work.  Performs variety of professional functions or managerial positions such as drafting, surveying, materials testing, calculations, may use CAD and AutoCAD. Some contact with property owner on jobsite. Preference given to those with technical and/or construction background or training. $19.24 to $39.99/hr., depending on qualifications.

CLERICAL/TECHNICAL: Clerical: Perform varied clerical duties such as typing, report and survey preparation, receptionist functions, collection of fees, computer data entry, radio communications, filing and other office duties.  May require valid driver's license and some working knowledge of computers and office procedures. Technical: Assist with surveying, inspection, material testing and similar tasks related to civil engineering construction work.  Requires some knowledge or experience with civil engineering methods or projects. $7.25 to $15.07/hr., depending on qualifications.

LIBRARY WORKER I: Interact with patrons to locate materials; use Web 2.0 technologies (blogs, wikis, etc.) to share information with colleagues; use technology to identify efficiencies in workflow; maintain library's collections through shelving and inventory control; work up to 19 hours per week, with flexible scheduling. LIBRARY WORKER II: Actively engage with the public of all ages at both library locations - in person, by phone, and online - for assistance and/or questions regarding collections, services, and patron accounts; use Web 2.0 technologies to promote library services and share information with library patrons and colleagues; handle library materials; prepare materials in all formats for public use; assist in coordinating library programs and events; work up to 1039 hours/year, hours and duration of employment may vary. Requirements for Library Workers I and II include demonstrated customer service skills; personal computer experience using Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, Internet Explorer, Access); ability to communicate effectively with the public and staff for independent and collaborative work. Use of blogs, wikis, and other social networking tools is a plus. Rate of pay: $7.61 to $11.98/hr., depending on qualifications.

LABORER: Opportunities will exist in various departments including parks, golf course, cemetery, streets and utilities. Entry Level: $6.55/hr. to $9.22/hr., depending on qualifications.Semi-skilled: $9.25/hr. to $13.02/hr., depending on qualifications.; Skilled: $13.67/hr. to $19.24/hr., depending on qualifications.  Requires abilities to operate hand tools and other power equipment.  May require valid driver's license or Commercial Driver's License.  Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions and perform manual labor for extended periods of time. May include mowing, weeding, painting fire hydrants.

REPAIRPERSON/MECHANIC: Repair wastewater treatment equipment and performs maintenance, repair and custodial duties relating to buildings and grounds. Must be 18 years of age (BFOQ) and have valid driver's license.  $8.27 to $11.64/hr.

LIFEGUARD:  Lifeguard I: Must have completed CPR-PR, life guarding and first aid training. Rate of pay: $7.00 to $9.85/hr., depending on qualifications. Lifeguard II: Responsible for pool management and operations (requiring CPR-PR, life guarding and first aid training), three years of life guarding experience with preference to those having completed the Life Guarding Instructors Course. $10.34 to $14.55/hr.

RECREATION WORKER I & II: Various positions may be available such as: Recreation Instructor: Develops lesson plans and teaches various sports such as tennis, ice sports, camps, swim lessons and recreation fitness. Must have thorough understanding of the sport for which employed and have the ability to demonstrate and teach skills of sport.  Previous experience desired but not required.  Activity Supervisor: Supervising youth activities (requiring CPR and first aid training), 18 years of age or older, good verbal communications and ability to work with children, valid driver's license, and previous experience desired but not required. Ice Rink Guard: Assist with activities at the Ice Rink, Skate Room and Concessions. $6.57 to $13.66/hr., depending on qualifications.
