The May citizen is an individual who is committed to helping others, professionally and in her volunteer activities. The May Citizen of the Month Award is presented to Cindy Wilson of Rapid City. Cindy has served on the WAVI (Working Against Violence, Inc.) Sexual Assault Response Team since 1997. As a member of the team, she is on call and responds to the emergency room to advocate for the needs of the victim during the rape exam. She also answers the crisis line during her shifts and has worked for hundreds of survivors in her time with WAVI. According to Christine Smith and Dannie Dosch who nominated Cindy, she is at all times a compassionate and professional advocate. "Her knowledge of sexual assault issues and rape trauma allow her to be truly present with the victims at a critical point in their path to recovery. Cindy continually goes above and beyond what is called for and we are fortunate to have her on our team." Cindy has lived in Rapid City since 1992, working for Behavioral Management and this past year for Youth & Family Services at their counseling center. Cindy is originally from Milbank and previously lived in the Minneapolis area. Her mother, Emma Flannery currently lives in Rapid City as does her daughter Amanda. Cindy has two children living in Minneapolis and three wonderful grandchildren. Cindy is very committed to her volunteer work with Working Against Violence and hopes that she is a good role model for her grandchildren. |
