Gorgie
Paulhamus! |
| July’s Citizen of the Month is an individual who has continually worked to further the educational opportunities of our youth. As Mayor of Rapid City, I am pleased to present the Citizen of the Month award to Gorgie Paulhamus. For the past nineteen years, Gorgie Paulhamus has worked for the Rapid City School District, starting as a tutor in 1974 and eventually working as a counselor for the District. Additionally, Gorgie works with Native students at the School of Mines, teaches at Oglala Lakota College and also serves as an adjunct professor for South Dakota State University, West River Graduate Center. Gorgie has been recognized by the Pennington County Bar Association with the Liberty Bell Award. This award recognizes outstanding community service by a non-lawyer who promotes a better understanding of law, encourages greater respect of the courts and stimulates a sense of civic responsibility and good government. Gorgie has been an advocate for minority student rights and equal education opportunities. She is a strong believer in positive community interaction and cross-cultural relationships. Gorgie worked with Governor Mickelson on a variety of education issues and reconciliation efforts and was instrumental in the efforts renaming Native American Day in South Dakota. Gorgie has been an active member of the Rapid City community, serving on the Sioux San Indian Health Board, Rapid City Chamber Board of Directors, Black Hills PowWow Board and was a member of the very first Leadership Rapid City class. A firm believer in education, Gorgie holds two Masters degrees – one in Secondary Education and the other in guidance and counseling. |
