Citizen
of the Month! October 2004 |

Congratulations
Ryan
Cuny and Tom Beetem! |
| The October 2004 Citizen of the Month belongs to two individuals who came to the aid of a young boy who was injured and helped him through a terrifying experience. As Mayor of Rapid City, I am pleased to present the Citizen of the Month award to Ryan Cuny and Tom Beetem. Ryan Cuny and Tom Beetem are service workers for Black Hills FiberCom. They came upon Joey Niehaus on Reservoir Road last June; he had a badly broken arm as a result of a dirt bike accident in the Rapid Valley area. John Niehaus, Joey’s father, relates that Joey had tried to stop several other cars, but none would stop until Ryan and Tom came along. Ryan and Tom not only stopped to render aid, but maintained a presence on the scene blocking traffic and running for first aid equipment. The next day, they went to Joey’s hospital room with a football and checked on his condition. John Niehaus states, “As a paramedic and firefighter of eighteen years, I have seen all types of people in this world – few would have done what they did that day. These men are greatly appreciated by my family and myself and should be commended for their selfless and thoughtful response to a young boy in need.” Barb Thirstrup of Black Hills Corp who nominated the two employees added her words of praise for their work. She notes that neither Ryan or Tom seek special recognition for their act of responsibility and kindness, but hope that other citizens will learn from their example of citizenship and help people in time of need. |
