The March, 2006 Citizen of the Month is an individual known for his unselfish service to the Community Food Bank. The March, 2006 Citizen of the Month award is presented to Richard “Buzz” Sawyer of Rapid City.

Buzz Sawyer has contributed unselfishly to the Community Food Banks of South Dakota and Rapid City and for eight years, has volunteered his time to help in the mission of feeding the hungry of this community.

Buzz retired from the United States Air Force with twenty plus years. He worked in the Rapid City School System as a custodian at Kibben Kuster and retired after a 20 foot fall. After many months of healing and physical therapy, Buzz started to volunteer at the Food Bank in 1999 where he worked an average of 120 hours a month.

Buzz soon contacted friends and teachers whom he had worked with to ask for their assistance in volunteering at the Food Bank. He has recruited Special Education classes from both Central High School and Stevens High School to come on a weekly basis to sort food.

Monica Leitheiser nominated Buzz because “he is an individual who believes in helping out his community and those that are less fortunate than him.”
