RAPID CITY AUTOMATED RECYCLING
Recycling containers are scheduled to be picked up every other week according to the following schedule:
- Homes with odd addresses will be picked up during the 1st and 3rd weeks of each month.
- Homes with even addresses will be picked up during the 2nd and 4th weeks of each month.
If your recycling container needs to be picked up on a week different than your address is scheduled, you can temporarily place your container on the opposite side of the street or alley.
Put the following items in your BLUE CONTAINER:
- GLASS - pickle jars, mayonnaise jars, beer bottles, baby food jars, etc.
- PLASTIC - milk, juice, ketchup, whip topping, cottage cheese, detergent, and shampoo containers, etc.
- ALUMINUM - pop cans, beer cans, personal hygiene products, etc.
- STEEL - coffee cans, food containers, empty paint cans, and empty aerosol cans, etc.
Remove all lids from containers and put lids in garbage. Labels can be left on containers. Rinse recyclables only to help keep you blue container clean and odor free!
NO PAPER, CARDBOARD, OR PLASTIC BAGS IN BLUE CONTAINER PLEASE!
Paper products go directly into the garbage. The organic part of the garbage, such as paper and cardboard, will be composted into an organic soil amendment. The City calls this process co-composting. The residential garbage will go into the Material Recovery Facility where non-recyclable items and non-compostable items, such as shoes, shock absorbers, suitcases, and toys, will be separated for landfill disposal. The remaining portion of the garbage, predominately organics, will then be mixed with the biosolids from the wastewater plant and composted for about six weeks. The result will be a rich organic soil amendment. This goes a long way towards using the earth's resources wisely and minimizing the amount of materials being wasted through landfill burial.
